The Frozen Shoulder Syndrome

What is a Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen Shoulder Syndrome or FSS is a painful and debilitating shoulder condition characterized by very limited arm movement and severe pain at the slightest move. Affecting more women than men, it can be confused with cervical radiculitis, rotator cuff strain and bursitis or tendonitis. True FSS will always have inflammation and scar tissue formation of the joint capsule.

While patients who suffer from FSS usually have a prior injury to the shoulder, the cause is still not clear. It is a condition more common in 20% of diabetics. However, the following issues have been associated with increased Fss risks: Parkinson’s disease, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, cardiac disease or a recent surgery.

This progressive condition is characterized by three stages – the freezing stage – pain gets worse over time which limits movement more and more, lasting several weeks to months. The frozen stage is when the shoulder has reached its maximum restricted pattern; pain may have subsided and only felt if the shoulder is moved beyond its restriction. You will not be able to reach behind your back and cannot bring the hand above the height of the shoulder. This stage can take 9 months. The last – thawing stage – the shoulder begins to thaw and become pain-free in 12 to 18 months with increased range of motion, as by natural healing.

Consider a chiropractor for your frozen shoulder where other treatments had failed, including physical therapy and pain killing medications. There is no need to wait for the shoulder to thaw Chiropractic adjustments are concentrated on manipulating the frozen shoulder joint and the area at the base of the neck. Restoring proper movement in the spine can help assist proper nerve function in the shoulder area. This can contribute to your recovery. Exercise and stretching are contributory.

Chiropractic for Headaches and Migraine in Edmonds

Spinal Manipulation for Headaches?

Did you know that 9 out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches, from occasional to persistent , dull to debilitating pain and nausea. While a small percentage of headaches have a serious underlying cause for which medical attention is required, for the majority of types, a myriad of measures are available to the sufferer.

Have you ever tried bringing your headache issues to a chiropractor? Spinal manipulation provided by chiropractic professionals have been shown in studies to be effective against tension headaches and headaches that originate from the neck. Muscle tension in the neck, such as experienced by people who remain in one posture for an extended time (working in front of computers or watching television), lead to joint irritation and tension in the upper back and scalp that cause headaches.

A North Carolina report found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than commonly prescribed medications. In an Australian clinical trial, a good 72% of patients who received chiropractic treatment experienced noticeable to substantial improvement in migraines. Another published study found that those who stopped chiropractic treatment after four weeks continued to experience a sustained benefit in contrast to those patients who received pain medication.

What can your chiropractor doctor do for you? Your treatment plan includes something like this: Perform spinal manipulation or other chiropractic adjustments to improve spinal function and alleviate stress; Provide nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet or the addition of vitamins. Offer advice on posture, ergonomics, exercises and relaxation techniques.

Can Chiropractic Lower High Blood Pressure?

Spinal Manipulation and High Blood Pressure

Back in 2007, there was a report from the University of Chicago Hypertension Center about a placebo-controlled trial that claimed a special chiropractic adjustment can significantly lower high blood pressure. The technique had the effect of two antihypertensive drugs and that there were no adverse reactions observed.

The study involved 25 patients with early-stage high blood pressure who were not on their medications during the 8-week trial. It was a double blind comparative study where 2 groups of similar patients received chiropractic adjustments of their spine, no one ever knowing which got the special adjustment. Radiographs showed the specific adjustment received by half of the cases where the atlas vertebra (or C-1), the bone at the very top of the spine, was realigned.

The results were impressive. Those 25 cases experienced an average drop of 14mm Hg of their systolic BP and an average 8mm Hg of their diastolic BP. The atlas vertebra can get locked out of line, even a few millimeters can cause loss of muscle control, sometimes painful, most times not.

Some researchers say that a misaligned C-1 can impede blood flow to the arteries at the base of the skull, or that the disturbed bone releases pain signals that make the arteries contract. Whether chiropractic can fix the injuries is not yet conclusive. More studies are needed.

But then, in 2015, another double-blind study reported “specific thoracic spinal manipulations affected three measures: blood pressure, pulse rate, and changes in hypertension (high blood pressure).” While these claims still lack conclusiveness, chiropractors everywhere continue to utilize spinal manipulation to address musculoskeletal issues. It is good that it can relieve back and neck pains, and able to address certain cardiovascular issues.

If you have high blood pressure, it may be helpful that aside from your medications and healthy lifestyle, chiropractic care may be added for good measure.
